This post is all about outdoor activities for teens and adults.
Playing outside doesn’t have to end once you grow up!
While you and your kids may have outgrown the swingset, there are ample activities to keep you occupied this summer without a screen!
Enjoy some fresh air and fun activities in the sun!
Outdoor Activities
1. Kan jam
Have you ever played Kan Jam?! A friend recommended this game to us last year and both sides of our family are pros by now.
Of all the outdoor activities available, this is our favorite!
We can’t get enough! You could totally DIY a kan jam set by cutting up a bucket and grabbing a frisbee, or there is this set on Amazon for only $40.
2. Spikeball
You can find a Spikeball set on Amazon for $60 but after you spend hours playing such a fun game, you’ll get your money’s worth!
Spikeball is easy to learn and quick to play, perfect for a group of adults looking for some fun competition.
There are local spikeball tournaments you can head to or you can just play as a family! The games last 15 mins, and it’s easy to rotate in whoever wants to play while someone else takes a break.
3. Tennis
There are tennis courts everywhere, all you need is some tennis balls and rackets.
Not only is tennis a perfect outdoor activity, it’s also quite a workout! Make sure to go at a cool time of day and pack water and sunscreen.
4. Pickleball
If you can’t quite master tennis (like me) you might try out pickle ball!
We got this set that includes 4 Pickleball paddles and 4 Pickleballs.
The court is a lot smaller than a tennis court, so you don’t spend as much time chasing flyaway balls. No Pickleball court? You can also use half a tennis court for Pickleball if there is no Pickleball-sized court nearby.
5. Water balloon fight
Okay have you seen the self-sealing water balloons by Zuru? It’s crazy, you hook up your hose to the end of a bunch of balloons and they all fill up in a matter of seconds, ready to go!
No tying, no wrestling each balloon onto the hose, no hours spent filling balloons.
Instead of spending hours to fill balloons for a few seconds of fun, you spend way less time filling the balloons! The whole experience is way more fun!
There are a ton of pack options on Amazon, from a try-out pack of 100 balloons to a bulk option of 350 balloons!
Throw in some water guns and you have a water fight!
6. Signs in the pool
We love to hang out in the hot tub out back, but sometimes feel bored in the pool. As a kid it was fun to dive for toys at the bottom, but not as much these days.
The other night we tried to play signs in the pool and it was so fun! Signs is like tag, but instead of touching each other, you pass the tag by signaling to someone else. My signal was to pull on my ear, and my brother’s was to stick out his tongue. So when my mother pulled on her ear, I had the sign, and I stuck out my tongue to pass it to my brother. My husband in the middle had to spin around and call out who he thought was ‘it’ until he caught us! Such a fun game, and being in the pool made it a little more exciting.
***Bonus: hot tub movie night!
If you do have a hot tub, with a little effort you can set up an epic movie night! Grab a laptop, some speakers, and your swim trunks. Relax in the hot tub while you watch a movie.
If you have a projector, you can hang a sheet from a deck or find an empty wall on the house. Project the movie and watch from the hot tub. Ah, so relaxing. That’s a fun twist on movie night!
7. Laser tag
My neighbor showed us these incredible laser tag guns, which she actually got as a wedding present (talk about a pro gifter!!)
The guns come with small vests for everybody to wear and shoot at. Here’s a set of 4 laser tag guns on Amazon.
A laser tag battle would be so fun outside in the dark with obstacles and hideouts. If you got a bunch of sets, you could host an epic teenage birthday party in an empty basement or all over the neighborhood. A summer of fun!
8. Wall ball
Wall ball is a fun game to play with lots of people. All you need is a wall and a ball!
We like to play against the garage and use a tennis ball. One person throws the ball at the garage and it bounces off. If the ball hits you without you catching it, you have to run to the garage and touch the wall before someone throws the ball at the garage again. If the ball hits the garage before you do, you’re out!
9. HORSE
A game for all the basketball lovers out there, HORSE is a simple game in a basketball court (or under a net on the driveway).
Everybody gets in a line behind the 2 or 3 point line (or, wherever agreed upon). One at a time, the first person in line shoots a basket. If they make it, they go to the back of the line. If they miss, they have to quickly grab the ball and shoot again. The person behind them can start shooting their ball, and if person #2 makes a basket before person #1, person #1 is penalized with a letter of HORSE. Once their collected letters spell HORSE, they are out.
Last man shooting wins!
10. Kickball
I thought kickball was a kids game until I played it with all of my brothers-in-law the other day. Now that we’re older, we can kick farther, run faster, and throw harder, perfect for a brutal game of kickball!
All you need to play is an open field, some bases, and a ball. It’s easy to make bases using hats and sweatshirts, but for an extra challenge, you could use camping chairs for the bases and the runner must sit in the chair before moving on!
You can play with a normal kickball, but we also had a lot of fun using a giant yoga ball. It’s pretty funny to watch someone get pummeled by a huge bouncy workout ball. We laughed a LOT.
11. Badminton
Last on our list of outdoor activities is Badminton. Badminton is an awesome game that you can set up literally anywhere – even your backyard!
This set comes with everything – an easy to set up net, stakes, rackets, and 2 birdies. Happy swatting!
Bonus: 12. Throw Throw Burrito
This game was recently recommended to me, and I’m planning to get it for Christmas! It’s made by the creators of Exploding Kitten, one of our family favorite card games.
This game is part card game and part dodgeball. Players draw and play cards until they declare battle on an opponent by throwing a squishy burrito at them.
Sounds amazing, right?!
If you get the game before I do, let me know how it goes!!
