Anyone can organize their home in a short amount of time.
I organized my ENTIRE home in just 30 days.
It. Feels. Awesome!!!
Suddenly, my home works *for* me, and it’s not full of projects and things that need to be managed.
Everything is functional, has a home, and is easy to clean. I’ve got more time than ever to spend on hobbies, self care, and creating content. Hooray!
Now, I want everyone to enjoy the same peace I feel.
Here are 5 tips you can use to easily organize your entire home!
Tip #1: Make a plan
You can organize your entire house, but it’s important to do so in one section at a time! You don’t want to pull everything out of closets and drawers only to run out of steam with a giant mess on your hands.
Instead, plan on tackling small projects every day. I’ve created a 30 day checklist you can download for free. It’s got 30 spaces in the house to organize each day, making this giant project much more manageable.
Once you have an organized plan, all you have to do is commit to consistently organizing a little each day!
Tip #2: Decluttering is key
Nothing makes organizing more difficult than having too much stuff!
Make any organizing project easier by starting with a great big decluttering session.
Get rid of anything broken or expired. Don’t keep the things you don’t love. If you haven’t used something for an entire year… consider giving it to someone who would!
Trust me, once you have less *things*, sorting & putting away everything you have left will be much more manageable.
Tip #3: Give everything a home
Once you’ve narrowed down how much stuff you actually need, it’s time to give all of your things a home!
Sort your stuff into categories, and assign each category to a specific & obvious spot. It’s helpful to put things next to where you will use them the most. For example, I always put a fresh pair of socks on before I go to sleep, so I keep my sock pile in my nightstand. We often make eggs for breakfast, so we keep pans, spatulas, and cooking spray next to the stove.
If you find that there are some items always “out of place”, make sure they actually have a home. Is your countertop always cluttered with mail? Perhaps you need a cubby on your desk with “incoming” and “outgoing” mail slots. Are you always tripping over shoes around the house? Perhaps your family needs a shoe shelf next to the front door. Look around and create homes for anything that you keep picking up!
If your family needs help remembering where things belong, you might benefit from using a label maker. They are surprisingly affordable tools on Amazon!
If a drawer, shelf, or cupboard is overflowing, some of the stuff in there needs a new home. You should have enough space to comfortably fit everything. Otherwise, you still have too much stuff *or* you need to have some better storage solutions.
Tip #4: Save money on storage solutions
A common misconception when it comes to organizing a home is that it’s a project too expensive worth tackling.
It’s true that some organizing solutions can be pricey – especially if you need a bunch of shelves, baskets, and bins!
However, there are many ways to minimize the cost as well as spread it out over a longer period of time.
For starters, make sure you’re using everything you’ve got! If you have empty shelves and drawers, but plenty of stuff on the floor, you’ve got a problem. Utilize every shelf and drawer you already have.
If you need more shelving, you can save money by building shelves yourself. You can find shelving options on facebook marketplace or at thrift stores. And finally, you can save money by waiting for stores to have discounted sales on the shelves you need.
Need more bins and baskets? Try using cardboard or shoe boxes until you’ve saved up for more durable options. When I was a college student, I had a huge drawer that was always a disorganized mess because it house my pajamas, swimsuits, and socks. I could never find my socks in all that chaos! One day, I cut apart a corn dog box, put it in the drawer, and filled it with my socks. Even though it wasn’t super pretty, I never had trouble finding my socks every again! Thanks, giant corn dog box.
You can also find cheap baskets and bins at local thrift stores or discount retail stores. In the past month, I’ve find over a dozen handy baskets that were less than $1!
Tip #5: Celebrate small wins
The final key to organizing your entire home in 1 month is to maintain momentum! There will be days when you don’t want to organize or feel like giving up. So plan out how you’ll celebrate each win and work towards those!
Take before and after pictures of each space you organize. Check off your 30 day checklist each time you complete a space. Treat yourself to self care nights after an organizing session. Show off your newly organized spaces to family and friends.
Pretty soon, you’ll have a beautifully organized home! It will function better, feel cleaner, and look better for you and your family to enjoy.
I hope these tips help you create the organized home of your dreams! Best of luck!
